About Saint Joseph Carpenter Society (SJCS)

Saint Joseph Carpenter Society (SJCS) is a 501(c)3 organization founded in 1985 by Father Bob McDermott who grew up in East Camden during the 1940s and 1950s as a member of a Catholic family in the solid working-class neighborhood in East Camden. SJCS focus is to improve the quality of life of the people of the City of Camden and its surrounding communities by promoting neighborhood wealth and cultivates community through healthy, affordable homes, vibrant neighborhoods, empowered residents, and small business support. SJCS envisions inclusive communities with access to high quality housing generating wealth and stable neighborhoods offering opportunity and providing stability support to our major business corridors located in East Camden and Cramer Hill. To that end, SJCS is regionally recognized as a leader in Camden’s revitalization and is a chartered member of NeighborWorks America, a network of over 240 community development organizations nationwide. Attaining chartered member status indicates that SJCS meets criteria that demonstrates excellence in leadership, organizational ability, and financial capacity.
